Thomas Tuchel has taken England somewhere Gareth Southgate never quite reached — a squad that is not just talented, but tactically defined. The German coach has settled on a 4-2-3-1 system built around Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson in the double pivot, with Jude Bellingham given the No. 10 role and Harry Kane leading the line. Modrić at AC Milan still pulls the strings, and Mateo Kovačić alongside him gives Croatia a midfield axis that has been functioning at the highest level for a decade. Joško Gvardiol, returning from a broken shin, is one of Europe’s best defenders and anchors the backline. Up front, Andrej Kramarić finished as Croatia’s top scorer in qualifying with six goals, while Ivan Perišić — still active at 36 — and Ante Budimir add further options.
Croatia are a side in transition but have not lost the nous that makes them so dangerous in knockout-format pressure games. This group opener is their toughest match, and Dalić will know that a point in Dallas would effectively open the door to the last 32.
